And so we’ve reached the end of an entertaining, exasperating and unfulfilling D.C. United season. We’ve seen an emotional return to first-team soccer (Charlie Davies), hat tricks (two by Dwayne De Rosario, one by Davies), season-ending injuries (Branko Boskovic, Chris Pontius, Jed Zayner), an assistant coach come out of retirement (Pat Onstad), a trade for the ages (DeRo for Dax McCarty), a satisfactory away record (5-8-4), an unacceptable home mark (4-4-8 before tonight), a wealth of goals scored (49), a wealth of goals against (51), the rise of rookies (Perry Kitchen, Ethan White, Chris Korb, Blake Brettschneider, Joe Willis), in-season departures (McCarty, Fred, Rodrigo Brasesco), a four-goal triumph (Vancouver), a four-goal setback (New York), five-game unbeaten streaks but no two-game winning streaks, a late four-game losing skid that severely bruised the playoff push, and, of perhaps greatest long-term concern, still no new stadium plan.
Where does United go from here? I touch on several topics, including roster issues, in today’s story, which is accompanied by a unique photo of DeRo.
