D.C. United Women win Eastern Conference title, advance to W-League semifinals

D.C. United Women, in just their second season, won the W-League’s Eastern Conference title Sunday, defeating the Charlotte Eagles, 3-0, at Maryland SoccerPlex.

United (13-0-1) advanced to the league semifinals next weekend in Ontario. The Ottawa Fury (10-2-0) will host the event, which will also include Central champion Quebec City Amiral (10-2-2) and Western winner Pali Blues (15-0-1) from Pacific Palisades, Calif.

The W-League, part of the United Soccer Leagues, is a second-division circuit with 30 clubs. DCU Women are licensed by D.C. United for branding purposes but are independently owned and operated.

English forward Lianne Sanderson scored in the 28th and 53rd minutes for United, and Hayley Siegel (Ellicott City, Md.) converted a free kick in the 42nd.
