D.C.’s Greatest Sports Fan: Help us choose

(Robert A. Reeder/TWP)

What makes someone a great sports fan?

More specifically, what makes someone a great D.C. sports fan?

We’re asking because we’re nearing the launch of a contest that hopes to identify the greatest Washington area pro sports fan. And we want your help.

Some of the criteria are obvious: passion for the area’s teams, knowledge about the teams and their history, commitment in bad seasons as well as good ... but what’s most important to you? And what characteristics might we not think of? Does attending games matter? How about posting about the teams somewhere on the Web?

Let us know in the comments. We’ll be reading — and perhaps adopting some of your suggestions as the contest comes together.

Note: For this contest, we’re concentrating on fandom as it pertains to D.C.’s five most popular professional teams — the Capitals, Nationals, Redskins, United and Wizards. We realize area college sports are important to many fans in the area, but to keep things simple -- and focus on teams that have appeal across the entire region — we’re sticking with the professional teams.
