James Madison Dukes surge in men’s soccer poll, RPI list; New Mexico Lobos and Stanford Cardinal are No. 1

James Madison University jumped nine positions to No. 12 in the NSCAA men’s poll this week. More impressively, the Dukes are (12-2-1) now No. 3 on the RPI list, which weighs strength of schedule and factors into the NCAA tournament selections.

Under Tom Martin, who is in his 26th season in Harrisonburg, Va., JMU has won 10 of 11 since a 4-1 loss at North Carolina and will host the Colonial Athletic Association tournament next week. The Dukes are at Drexel today. [UPDATE: RPI jinx? JMU lost, 2-0.]

JMU will have more to celebrate next week when former forward C.J. Sapong of Sporting Kansas City is expected to win the MLS rookie of the year award.

With Maryland’s loss at Clemson, undefeated New Mexico claimed the No. 1 position ahead of Creighton and North Carolina. Maryland, which closes the regular season Thursday at home against Wake Forest, is No. 4.

In the women’s poll, unbeaten Stanford remained at the top, with Virginia, which has won six in a row, moving up four spots to No. 5. The 64-team NCAA women’s tournament brackets will be unveiled next Monday.
