Manchester United vs. Schalke 04 in Champions League semifinal

Good afternoon.

Manchester United and Schalke are about ready to square off in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinals

Time, TV: 2:30 p.m. Fox Soccer Channel, Fox Deportes (tape at 5 on Fox Soccer Plus and at 5:45 p.m. on on demand).

Check out a Manchester United-Schalke photo gallery of the teams’ past Champions League games.

Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson’s experiment with Twitter went poorly.

Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer stymied Wayne Rooney on a huge stage once before: last summer for Germany against England in the World Cup. Now he hopes to do so again for Schalke against Manchester United.

The fantastically named Ian Ladyman of the Daily Mail says Rooney “has been a shadow of what we have known before” in 2010-11. Rooney is back in Gelsenkirchen, where he was sent off against Portugal in the 2006 World Cup.

Manchester United has never beaten a German team in a two-legged Champions League series, losing all four.

Saying “it’s fun again,” 33-year-old Schalke striker Raul is playing well as his career winds down. He’s by far the all-time leading goal-scorer in Champions League play.

After spending the first 17 years of his Post career writing and editing, Matt and the printed paper had an amicable divorce in 2014. He's now blogging and editing for the Early Lead and the Post's other Web-based products.
