Memorial service, reception set for John Kerr Sr.

A memorial service for John Kerr Sr., a longtime player and coach with deep roots in the Washington soccer community who died at age 67, will be held Saturday at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham, N.C. His son, Duke Coach John Kerr Jr., said a viewing will begin at 1 p.m. and a service at 2 p.m. Afterward, a reception will be held at Duke’s Yoh Football Center. The public is welcome.

In lieu of flowers, Kerr Jr. asked that friends and colleagues support fundraising efforts for Malia Jusczyk, a child with an aggressive form of cancer. Kerr Jr. and her father Glen were teammates in an adult league in Boston. Glen, a former college and pro player, serves on the board of directors at Soccer for Kids Sake, a non-profit organization.

An obituary is scheduled to appear in The Post on Friday. The cause of death wasn’t immediately known but a heart attack or stroke is suspected, Kerr Jr. said.

D.C. United will hold a moment of silence before Saturday’s MLS match against the Houston Dynamo at RFK Stadium.

Steven Goff is The Post’s soccer writer. His beats include D.C. United, MLS and the international game, as well as local college basketball.
