*One day after being named to the U.S. national team roster for Wednesday’s friendly against Mexico in Philadelphia, German-based defender Timmy Chandler has withdrawn from the squad. According to the U.S. Soccer Federation, he is “working back to full fitness after suffering an injury setback in advance of the start of the Bundesliga season.” Zach Loyd, 24, who is in his second MLS season with FC Dallas and made his international debut in January against Chile, was summoned. Chandler, 21, also missed the CONCACAF Gold Cup in order to recuperate from the 2010-11 Bundesliga season, his first in the top flight with Nuremberg.

*Thomas Dooley, one of Juergen Klinsmann’s guest assistants for the Mexico match, would like to be considered for the under-23 head coaching position, I’m hearing. Both the U-23 and U-20 jobs are open, and Klinsmann is expected to have an influential role in the hiring process. The U-23 squad is, in essence, the Olympic team, which in March will vie for one of CONCACAF’s two berths in next year’s Summer Games.

*Brian Mullan’s thunder strike during the Colorado Rapids’ 2-0 victory over the Columbus Crew on Friday night:
