Soccer at the cinema: ‘Will’ and ‘Rise & Shine: The Jay DeMerit Story’

Two soccer-themed films are set for release in the coming weeks:

“Will,” directed by American Ellen Perry and starring Damian Lewis (“Band of Brothers”) and Bob Hoskins, is the story of an 11-year-old English orphan who sets off to Istanbul to attend the 2005 UEFA Champions League final between Liverpool and AC Milan. Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard make appearances. The film is set for release in England on Nov. 4. No word on if or when it will make its way to the United States. FourFourTwo magazine says: “There probably isn’t enough match action for the fans and perhaps too many football references to irk those who don’t like the game — or hate Liverpool. But as a family effort, ‘Will’ struggles back from an early deficit to scrape a narrow win ... on penalties.”

And then there is “Rise & Shine: The Jay DeMerit Story,” a documentary about the Green Bay-raised U.S. World Cup defender who began his international soccer journey in park leagues in London and the seventh tier of English soccer before breaking through at Watford.

After a public campaign to raise funds for distribution, the film is now available to the masses at select theaters on specific dates in early November. Trailer:
