FINAL: Belgium 1, USA 0. Encouraging start and finish but scoreless again: no goals in two matches over five days, one goal in three friendlies under Klinsmann. “It’s frustrating, but at times, we played good football,” Dempsey said in an ESPN interview. “We’ve just got to keep moving forward and we’ll be alright.”

Klinsmann: “I haven’t seen the replay, but I thought we had a clear goal. The refs didn’t help us.”

88th: USA pressing for last-gasp equalizer.

86th: Edu eight-yard header finds the target but disallowed — apparent offside on initial ball served into the box. Edu nodded second ball into left corner, only to have it annulled.

84th: USA still within a goal after another Belgium threat but doesn’t seem capable of an equalizer

80th: Shea penetrates on the left but shut down.

79th: Agudelo runs at defender at end of counter but unable to find necessary space to shoot.

76th: Larentowicz for Torres, who played 90 on Friday.

71st: Dempsey lovely fake to stroll into box for clear bid, but weak effort at goalkeeper.

70th: Shea perseveres, crosses to Agudelo at near post, deflected for corner kick.

68th: Americans keeping the ball but in need of fresh ideas to break down resistance.

63rd: USA lacking traction in attack. Harmless crosses, no sustained possession.

55th: Belgium 1, USA 0. Nicolas Lombaerts of Zenit Saint-Petersburg. Left-footed one-timer with ferocious pace from 22 yards skips under diving Howard. Throw-in had been headed out into Lombaerts’ path.

55th: Mertens dancing, turning on right side of box, draws corner kick, USA clears.

50th: Lively start to the second half, quicker pace, half-chances in the steady rain.

46th: USA lineup changes at start of second half with Agudelo for Altidore, Beckerman for Rogers.

HALFTIME: USA showed early promise before Belgium took hold of the methodical match and threatened on several occasions. Howard was up to the task. 0-0 at the break. High marks for Howard and Torres. Chandler looks out of place on the left. Edu needs support in deep midfield — Beckerman after the break?

42nd: Torres sparks counter, Rogers draws foul beyond right corner of penalty area. Torres’ left-footed free kick headed out.

39th: Belgium displaying superb ball movement, fluid attack, building toward a breakthrough. USA bending, not breaking.

34th: Howard reflex save on Fellaini’s eight-yard volley — Everton teammates! Howard has rescued USA several times, man of the match so far.

30th: Belgium discovering space and opportunities. Howard near-post save on Hazard. Ensuing corner kick headed by Bocanegra dangerously across the six-yard box.

28th: Belgium seizing control of the match with repeated threats. Mertens narrowly misses the near side.

26th: Howard diving save to his right on Simons’ swerving low blast from beyond the box!

25th: Cherundolo seeks out Shea, but Belgium clear at last instant.

21st: Torres slow to rise after colliding with Bocanegra.

20th: Belgium free kick on left edge of box, cleared out by Dempsey.

18th: USA free kick from just outside right of box. Torres curls toward back post, just beyond Dempsey and wide of the target.

15th: Through the first quarter-hour, Americans are the more impressive side. Belgium enjoying improved possession, but no threats against Howard.

12th: Torres corner into the mix, recovers ball outside the box, creates mild threat.

11th: Shea draws corner kick.

10th: USA stable in the back, taking initiative in attack.

5th: After Shea taken down from behind, Dempsey 30-yard free kick skips off slick surface and strikes goalkeeper in face, Altidore unable to make contact on rebound.

3rd: Chandler long ball out of the back, targets Altidore, who draws fould near midfield.

1ST MINUTE: Kickoff in Brussels!

The sides haven’t played one another since February 1998, a 2-0 Belgium victory in Brussels. For nostalgia buffs, the American lineup that day featured a striking tandem of Eric Wynalda and Roy Lassiter, with Earnie Stewart, John Harkes, Claudio Reyna and Cobi Jones in midfield, and Mike Burns, Alexi Lalas, Marcelo Balboa and Jeff Agoos in front of Kasey Keller.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, Juergen Klinsmann will attempt to avoid becoming the first U.S. coach since Lothar Osiander in 1986-87 (draws with Canada and Uruguay, loss to Egypt) to begin his tenure winless through three matches.

This is the Americans’ first match in Europe since March 2010 at Netherlands.
