MIDFIELDERS: Freddy Adu (Philadelphia Union), Joe Corona (Club Tijuana), Mix Diskerud (Gent), Jared Jeffrey (Mainz), Amobi Okugo (Philadelphia Union), Michael Stephens (Los Angeles Galaxy).

FORWARDS: Juan Agudelo (New York Red Bulls), Terrence Boyd (Borussia Dortmund), Teal Bunbury (Sporting Kansas City), Joe Gyau (Hoffenheim), Brek Shea (FC Dallas), Tony Taylor (Estoril).

Of note: Defender Josh Gatt was recalled by his injury-weakened Norwegian club, Molde. Hertha Berlin defender Alfredo Morales was not released, and U.S. Coach Caleb Porter had no hope of gaining a release for striker Jozy Altidore, a first-team regular for Dutch club AZ Alkmaar. (The tournament doesn’t fall during a FIFA fixture window.)

Adu is the captain, Kitchen the vice-captain.

By finishing first or second, the Americans would advance to the March 31 semifinals (NBC Sports Network) at Livestrong Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan. Mexico and Honduras are favored to come out of Group B, which is based at Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

The two semifinal winners will secure berths at the 2012 Summer Games.
