*Mexican-American-Salvadoran striker Joe Corona told my Washington Post colleague Paul Tenorio that he has been selected for the U.S. under-23 national team roster ahead of a camp in Germany. Corona, 21, who plays for Tijuana, was expected to join the senior squad last summer, but Bob Bradley’s dismissal altered the plans. Mexico considered him for the Pan American Games but didn’t select him.

*Another American with Latin American roots, former University of Virginia goalkeeper Diego Restrepo, is not under U.S. consideration at the moment, but his status at America de Cali in Colombia is intriguing. I’ve been told that, in the next few weeks, Restrepo, who turns 24 in February, will probably sign a long-term deal with America or learn more about his transfer options. Mexican club Pachuca expressed interest recently.

*The MLS playoffs continue tonight with two conference semifinal second legs: Real Salt Lake carries a 3-0 advantage into Seattle to face feisty Kasey Keller and the Sounders (10 p.m. ET, ESPN2) while Sporting Kansas City holds a two-goal lead over the injury and suspension depleted Colorado Rapids (8 p.m. ET, Fox Soccer). With passage, K.C. would host Houston or Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference final Sunday.
