At a news conference introducing Mark Gottfried as North Carolina State’s new men’s basketball coach on Tuesday, Wolfpack Athletic Director Debbie Yow accused Maryland men’s basketball Coach Gary Williams of interfering with her search for a new coach.

“I don’t have a reputation across all men’s basketball of being difficult to work with. I have a reputation of not getting along with Gary Williams, who has tried to sabotage the search. Come on. We all know that, okay?” Yow said. “It’s not a reputation, it’s Gary Williams out there doing his thing.”

Yow was Maryland’s athletic director from 1994 to 2010. Her relationship with Williams was strained, at best. Multiple high-ranking Maryland boosters said Yow contacted them during the 2008-09 men’s basketball season to gauge their interest in buying out Williams’s contract. Williams, Maryland’s coach since 1989, and the Terrapins athletic department publicly feuded in 2009 over the recruitment of two players who ended up attending other schools.

Williams did not return a call asking for comment.
