Kids worldwide — and a few celebrities — helped set a world record on Tuesday, donating more than 16,000 used running shoes destined to become surfaces for playgrounds and athletic fields.

The count by Guinness’s Mike Janela completed a program that included celebrity donations from Taylor Swift, One Direction, Danica Patrick, Amanda Beard and Eli Manning.

“It took me three-and-a-half hours to count them,’’ said Janela, wearing a crisp navy blazer in the Washington morning chill.

National Geographic said the shoes, if they were laid together as a chain, would stretch more than two miles.

Nike’s Reuse-a-Shoe program mashes up the sneakers into material that helps create surfaces for soccer fields, playgrounds and basketball and tennis courts, said Rachel Buchholz, managing editor of National Geographic Kids.
