The long-awaited release of Apple’s iPhone 5 has arrived, and eager customers in the Washington area and around the world are scrambling to get their hands on the new version of the iconic smartphone.

Fans in Washington, New York and other cities camped out in front of Apple stores overnight in hopes of snagging an iPhone when U.S. locations opened Friday morning.

The iPhone 5, which is lighter and thinner than the iPhone 4S that preceded it, is expected to become the best-selling iPhone, despite lukewarm critical reviews. Apple reported 2 million pre-orders in the first 24 hours after announcing the phone’s release.
