Otter-mania at the National Zoo includes naming contest, commemorative cupcake

As part of the celebration welcoming 13 new small-clawed otters to the zoo next month, the zoo is giving the public the chance to name one.

There are eight female and five male otters in the group, but the gender of the otter who will receive the winning name is unclear.

People can vote on their favorite name through April 30, and the winner will be announced on May 12, when the new additions are added to the Asia Trail display.

The National Zoo has partnered with Whole Foods for the contest, so people can vote at area store locations and Facebook pages.

And Georgetown Cupcake is creating a commemorative “Otterly Delicious” cupcake that will be available through April 30 at its Bethesda and Georgetown locations. All of the proceeds from the cookies and cream-flavored cupcakes will be donated to the zoo.

The grand unveiling of the otter family will take place on May 12 in the zoo’s otter habitat at 8 a.m. for Friends of the National Zoo and 10 a.m. for the general public.

Zoo officials said that everyone will receive an “ottergraph,” featuring otter illustrations and their names, at the event.
