The Daily Progress reports that the iconic television personality and animal rights activist is upset over a medical training technique used at the school that university officials say helps students insert breathing tubes into critically ill newborns.

“I’m very concerned about the pain and suffering these animals experience — and I’m also worried that pediatrics residents are being short-changed on their education,” Barker, 88, wrote in a letter he provided to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine group Monday.

A university spokeswoman has countered by saying that it is the best available method to save the lives of ill newborns. In 2009, Barker donated $1 million for the creation of an animal rights law program at the school.
