Herman Cain raised $2.8 million in the third quarter and has $1 million cash on hand, according to his campaign.
The former Godfather’s Pizza CEO announced the total during a campaign appearance in Tennessee Friday. He said the campaign had no debt.
The total comes in well shy of the other two front-runners in the GOP race, as former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney raised more than $14 million and Texas Gov. Rick Perry raised better than $17 million. Both men have about $15 million cash on hand.
Cain surged in the race at the end of the quarter, with his victory in the Florida straw poll coming with one week left in the quarter. In the weeks since, he has surged into a statistical tie with Romney atop the GOP presidential race.
