Granholm, who spent eight years as the governor of the Wolverine State, was widely regarded as one of the frontrunners for the post thanks to her roots in a central 2012 battleground state — and region — as well as her communication skills, particularly on television.
Without her in the mix, former Ohio governor Ted Strickland may well be the frontrunner for the post. Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is also regularly mentioned as a top-tier candidate. Some insiders have floated the name of Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin but he is apparently not interested in the job.
Kaine is widely expected to step down as DNC chairman to run for the seat being vacated by Democratic Sen. Jim Webb (D). Kaine has been heavily recruited by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to make the race, which will likely pit him against former governor George Allen (R).
