The 2012 Republican presidential race — in one map

The Fix has written tens of thousands of words on this Republican presidential race. Little did we know that Sean Trende at Real Clear Politics had boiled it all down into a single map.

Below is the county by county results for the states that have held presidential primaries or caucuses so far in 2012. Green indicates counties won by former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, blue counties won by former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and red counties won by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

The lesson? Demography is destiny. Romney wins in the Northeast and in states with strong Mormon populations. Gingrich wins in the South. Santorum wins in the Plains. All of which means Gingrich should win in Alabama and Mississippi tonight....

Chris Cillizza writes “The Fix,” a politics blog for the Washington Post. He also covers the White House.
