Romney just needs to keep smiling

All the Republican presidential candidates and the party itself have been challenged by the force of nature that is Donald Trump. This won’t be Mitt Romney’s last time to be influenced by Trump’s gravity. Trump can come and go from campaign 2012 pretty much at will.

To state the obvious, there is a big appetite for Trump in the media, among the left and the right. Trump makes news. If he feels slighted, he makes news. If he is saluted, he makes news. Romney doesn’t want to be in a fight with Trump about anything. That would make David Plouffe’s day.

Romney just has to be himself. Be a good sport, shrug and play along. Don’t look too serious or say anything to stir the pot. So Carter is right — Romney should take the money, say thanks to Mr. Trump for the fundraising and move on.
