My own personal recollection of working for George H.W. Bush when he finished third in Iowa in 1988 is something I have tried to block from my memory. But I still vividly recall going through my checkbook and adding the amount in my savings account to determine how long I had before I had to go back home to Alabama.
To make a long story short, the defeat in Iowa was good for Bush and good for the team. We stared into the abyss, and everyone became very determined, to say the least. So I would dial up the old Rolling Stones classic, “You can’t always get what you want, but sometimes, you get what you need.”
