Arlington Democrats to choose County Board candidate earlier than expected

This story has been updated due to a change in venue.

The Arlington County Democratic Committee will be choosing its candidate for the open County Board seat a month earlier than previously announced, and will hold a candidates’ forum on Wednesday.

The forum will be 7 p.m. at the NRECA building, 4301 Wilson Blvd. in Ballston at Founders Hall at George Mason Law School (3351 Fairfax Dr.), Room 124. Those who have filed for Democratic nomination so far include: Melissa Bondi, Peter Fallon, Libby Garvey, Kim Klingler, Elmer Lowe and Terron Sims. Candidates have until Jan. 9 to declare they intend to seek the nomination.

The seat is open because County Board member Barbara Favola was elected to the state senate.

The Democrats will hold their caucus over two days – from 7 to 9 p.m . Jan. 19 at Washington-Lee High School and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 21 at Kenmore Middle School.

Neither the Arlington County Republican Committee nor the Arlington Green Party have announced whether they will put up candidates for the seat in the heavily Democratic county.

The seat is open because current County Board member Barbara Favola was elected to the state senate in November.

The Arlington Electoral Board set a deadline of Jan. 27 for party certification of County Board candidates for the upcoming special election.
