Howard’s ‘Prestige’ homecoming begins

Rapper Talib Kweli and gospel singer Shirley Caesar are among the headliners for this year’s homecoming festivities at Howard University, which began on Friday.

Howard’s homecoming is mainstay for entertainers and typically brings thousands of people to the District each year. Here are some of the key events.

Sunday, Oct. 16 at 7PM

Gospel Show

Gospel legend Shirley Caesar will perform at this year’s gospel show “Unstoppable: Genesis to Revelation.” Also performing are Marcus D. Wiley Vashawn Mitchell, Y’Anna Crawley and more. The Gospel show will take place Cramton Auditorium. Student Admission-$20, General Admission-$25.

Monday, Oct. 17 at 7PM

Comedy Show

Headlining at this year’s Comedy Show, “Comedy Hangover: #Funny,” is Nephew Tommy of the Steve Harvey Show. Other guests include Jacques Kindle, Spoken Reasons, Del Harrison, Ray Lipowski and Joe Clair. The show will be held in Cramton Auditorium. Student Admission-$25, General Admission-$30.

Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7PM

Poetry Cipher

“Prominence: The Eloquence of the Scribes,” an evening of expressive poetry, will be headlined by rapper Talib Kweli, with special guests, Queen Godis, Taalam Acey and actor Omari “Wise-O” Hardwick. The location of the cipher will be the Lincoln Theater. Student Admission-$25, General Admission-$30.

Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7PM & 10 PM

Fashion Show I & II

A two-part fashion show, “Empressions: Dreaming of a New Dawn” was inspired by The Emperor’s New Clothes tale according to coordinator DeMarkis Brown and assistant coordinator Brittany Ireland. Both fashion shows will take place in Cramton Auditorium. Student Admission-$35, General Admission-$45.

Thursday, Oct. 20 at 7PM

Celebrity Basketball Game

“Final Call: All Star Mayhem” is this year’s celebrity basketball game. Guests coming to Howard’s Burr Gymnasium include Cory Hardrict, Omari Hardwick, Toccara Jones and more. Student Admission-$20, General Admission-$25.

Friday, Oct. 21 at 8PM

The R&B Concert

One of the most highly anticipated of the homecoming events, this year’s R&B show entitled “The Prototype: Unconventional Sound” will take a step back to 90s R&B with performances by Tyrese, Joe, Avant and Monica. Also performing is Melanie Fiona. This year the R&B Concert has moved from Cramton Auditorium to the D.C. Armory. Student Admission-$40, General Admission-$50.

Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7PM

Step Show

Hosted by comedian Billy Sorrells and MC Lyte, the step show will take place at the DC Armory. Student Admission and General Admission-$50
