Is Herman Cain’s ‘CEO presidency’ simply dictatorship?

Herman Cain and Mitt Romney are running campaigns centered around the premise that CEO leadership is exactly the kind of leadership America needs right now.

Not so, writes Third Way president Jonathan Cowan, who says in almost every way, CEO leadership is nearly identical to benevolent dictatorship.

The entire leadership model of a successful CEO is vastly different from that of a successful president. As political commentator Bill Schneider has pointed out, corporations are designed to be more like benevolent dictatorships; in contrast, the presidency is the leadership of a large and unruly democracy.

Allen McDuffee writes about politics and policy and covered think tanks for The Washington Post from 2011 to 2013. He freelances and hosts a podcast at governmentality.net and is currently working on a book about the influence of think tanks in Washington.
