Here’s my prediction for today. The GOP will not win back the White House in 2012. But even if they do, they won’t repeal Obamacare on Day One. Nor will they repeal it on Day Any.

Here’s why I say these things, starting at the end and working back towards my first assertion. They won’t repeal it ever because the law just makes too much sense, and the longer people look at it, the more obvious that gets. People are not going to want to go back to the way things were before, and any alternative arrangements or adjustments will be just that, alternative arrangements and adjustments. Not repeal. And they won’t do it on Day One for the same reason.

The hysteria ginned up over this bill (which was built out of the policy positions of both parties) was little more than anti-Obama fury, and blind determination to see to it that he did not succeed at anything. Well he did succeed, and you can’t get that touchdown off the scoreboard. But even if he hadn’t succeeded, the nation was going to have to do something like Obamacare eventually. Now it’s done, and cynical politics aside, people are not going to want to start over and go through that all again, just to end up at approximately the same place. Ask Romney when you’re in a quiet room with him. The hysteria and insane charges against the law are going to be increasingly seen for what they were. And that, among other reasons, is why the GOP will not win in November.
