Jose Antonio Vargas on ABC News (ABC News)

Jose Antonio Vargas was among those who covered the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings at The Post, for which he won the journalism award.

ABC News staffer Dan Harris has interviewed Vargas and it will air Thursday, June 23 on “World News with Diane Sawyer” and “Nightline,” and Friday, June 24 on “Good Morning America.”

“I wasn’t supposed to be there. I wasn’t supposed to be walking with Mark Zuckerberg. I wasn’t supposed to be interviewing Romney’s sons. Why was I doing it? Because I wanted to survive. I wanted to live. I wanted to earn what it means to be an American,” Vargas told ABC News.

(Simultaneous to ABC News’ announcement, the New York Times posted on its Web site a feature Vargas has written on the subject, “My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant.”)

ABC News said Vargas decided to disclose his status last December when Congress failed to pass the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act -- a bill that would allow illegal immigrants who came to this country as children to become citizens, if they go to college or serve in the military.
