The procedural’s showrunner has signed a new deal with its studio, reports Deadline.

CBS now hopes to close new deals with the cast for a ninth season.

Historically, that hasn’t always gone well. Original star Mandy Patinkin walked away from the show abruptly in the summer of ’07, leaving the show in the lurch.

And in the the summer of ’10, CBS decided to ditch two of the show’s ensemble cast, A.J. Cook and Paget Brewster, so the show would evolve, CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler explained around that time. Cook wound up being re-hired later.

In March, CBS announced it had renewed 18 of its primetime shows for the 2013-14 TV season, including nine other dramas: “NCIS,” “NCIS: Los Angeles,” “CSI,” “Person of Interest,” “Elementary,” “Hawaii Five-O,” The Mentalist,” “Blue Bloods,” and “The Good Wife.” Noticeably missing: “Criminal Minds” and “Vegas.”

In the same announcement, CBS said it had picked up four current comedies, three reality series and two newsmags.
