Everyone's been talking this week on "Dancing With the Stars" about how it was most talented final four ever. Sure enough, TV host Maria Menounos/Derek Hough got a nearly-perfect 59 combined points on Monday night's performance show — the lowest scoring couple, classical singer Katherine Jenkins/Mark Ballas, were separated by a mere three points.
But higher-scoring Maria and Derek were sent home on Tuesday night, to obvious surprise from everyone in the audience. The major difference between the two couples: Katherine Jenkins broke down in tears after a minor back injury on Monday night.
So, the obvious question: Did sympathy votes play a part? Despite having the lowest score, Katherine and Mark weren't even in the bottom two on Tuesday — that honor went to Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd. It's possible that the drama surrounding Katherine's injury sent her sailing through the season finale next week.
She later tweeted bravely on Tuesday that she was feeling better — still, could viewers have felt too bad to let her go home after the tears?
Either way, let this be a lesson to Maria: It's not always about dancing on "Dancing"; it's about drama. Ironically, Maria was frequently called out as the most injured person of the season — broken ribs, hurt chin, fractured feet. Yet she downplayed her injuries every time, even after producers showed footage of her going to the doctor, and refused to talk about the pain.
While playing it “brave” could have seemed like a good idea, just a thought for Maria: You may want to save your stoicism for another show.
