War veteran/soap opera actor J.R. Martinez’s stint on “Dancing With the Stars” started out strong, and it ended on a less impressive note with injuries and some sub-par performances — no matter. He was crowned the winner of season 13 on Tuesday night’s finale.

Popular with viewers despite receiving less judges points than early front-runner Ricki Lake, J.R. walked away with the hideous-yet-highly-coveted Mirror Ball Trophy.

The crowd in the ballroom seemed shocked when talk show host Ricki Lake, an front-runner from the start and judge favorite, was eliminated early in the night to finish third. Reality star Rob Kardashian finished the competition in second place, and seemed as surprised as anyone he made it that far.

Meanwhile, this season’s former contestant Carson Kressley may walk away with some headlines of his own. The “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” host returned to the finale for a performance in which he danced with male members of the professional dance troupe, the closest the show has been to featuring same-sex dance partners. There was speculation earlier in the season whether Kressley, who’s openly gay, would be the first contestant to be part of a same-sex pairing.
