Though he has spent roughly four decades in Virginia, former Sen. George Allen (R) was born and raised in Southern California, so he will be on familiar turf next week when he travels west for a luncheon event.

Allen, the GOP frontrunner in the race to replace retiring Sen. James Webb (D), will head to Newport Beach Thursday to speak at the September luncheon of the Newport Harbor Republican Women. After the luncheon Allen will be signing copies of his book, “What Washington Can Learn From the World of Sports.”

Newport Beach, in Orange County, is roughly 40 miles southeast of Palos Verdes, where Allen went to high school.

Allen’s event in California will come exactly a week after his likely Democratic opponent, ex-Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, held a pair of fundraising events in Chicago. Allen’s campaign criticized Kaine for being “hundreds of miles away” from Virginia during President Obama’s jobs speech Thursday night.
