McDonnell names state education, health officials

Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell (R) named two officials to key social policy posts Monday, picking Laura Fornash as interim Secretary of Education and Cynthia B. Jones to be director of the Department of Medical Assistance Services.

Fornash succeeds Gerard Robinson, who was lured away from Virginia in June to serve as head of Florida’s state schools system. Fornash joined the administration in 2010 as deputy Secretary of Education, and before that she held posts in Virginia Tech’s government relations office.

Jones has held a variety of public health-care positions in Virginia over the past three decades, according to a release from McDonnell’s office. She currently runs the Virginia Health Reform Initiative and will continue in that position in addition to her new role.
