McDonnell (R) mentioned his family’s role while talking about the benefits of the movie filming in Virginia on his monthly radio show on WRVA Thursday morning.

The movie, which just finished filming on Capitol Square and a few other locations in Richmond, has moved to Petersburg to much disappointment to many in the capital city.

The film is based on the 2005 book “Team of Rivals” by Doris Kearns Goodwin and stars Day-Lewis as Lincoln and Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln. It focuses on the road to abolition and the end of the Civil War.

Lincoln, the 16th president, visited Richmond, the former capital of the confederacy, in April 1865, right after the city fell and shortly before he was assassinated.
