Retiring Sen. Wampler will head New College Institute

Sen.WilliamWampler, the ranking Republican on the state Senate Finance Committee who stunned colleagues last year by not seeking re-election, has a new job.

The board of directors at New College Institute in Martinsville unanimously tapped Wampler to be their new executive director Tuesday.

He will begin Jan. 12, the day after he completes his term in the General Assembly.

Wampler has represented the Republican-leaning district that includes the counties of Dickenson, Lee, Scott and Wise, part of Washington County, and the cities of Bristol and Norton since 1988.

His father, WilliamWampler, spent more than 15 years in Congress representing Southwest Virginia before being defeated by former Rep. Rick Boucher.

The appointment was immediately praised by Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.) who said Wampler will bring the energy, experience and statewide contacts to take NCI to the next level.

“When I was governor, I was proud to work with the General Assembly to commit the first-ever state funding to launch NCI back in 2005,’’ Warner said in a statement. “And Senator Wampler was an excellent partner as we worked together on economic and educational opportunities for every region of Virginia.”
