But over the weekend, with little fanfare, the GOP opened a slew of offices of its own.

That’s in addition to the nine offices that remained opened after Gov. Bob McDonnell’s successful election in 2009.

On Saturday, former congressman Artur Davis (who is eyeing another run for Congress in Virginia) helped the GOP coordinated campaign open the Bristow victory office in Prince William County.

The others are in Stafford, Sterling, Springfield, McLean, Roanoke, Henrico, Fredericksburg, Charlottesville, Chesapeake, Abingdon, Virginia Beach, Woodbridge, Newport News, Lynchburg, Leesburg, Harrisonburg, Fairfax, Chesterfield, Danville and Blacksburg. The state headquarters will be in Arlington.

The offices are part of a joint effort of the Republican National Committee, the Republican Party of Virginia and presidential hopeful Mitt Romney with the goal of electing Republicans up and down the ticket.

“We are already making thousands of calls, knocking on doors, and registering voters across the state as we prepare to unleash the largest GOP get-out-the-vote effort in Virginia history,” according to a GOP operative in Virginia. “In 2012, we will – at a minimum – match Democrats door knock for door knock, phone call for phone call, and volunteer for volunteer.’’
