Virginia Senate fight fuels fundraising

Virginia Democrats and Republicans raised and spent millions over the past three months in their struggle for control of the state Senate, according to campaign finance reports released Monday.

The Senate Democratic caucus, which is trying to hang onto its slim majority, raised nearly $2.1 million in cash and in-kind donations between July 1 and Sept. 30, according to the Virginia Public Access Project, a nonpartisan tracker of money in politics.

At the end of the reporting period two weeks ago, the caucus had about $1.6 million in cash on hand.

Gov. Bob McDonnell’s Opportunity Virginia PAC took in $851,841 in cash and in-kind contributions and had nearly $1.4 million in the bank.

The Republican Senate caucus took in $367,498 in cash and in-kind contributions and had $471,077 on hand.
