Tired of city living? Looking for a place with a bit of history along with a lot of land and water access? This week’s featured house offers all that and more.

Situated on 127 acres on a peninsula off the Potomac River in Charles County, Maiden Point Farm was once the home of the first elected female governor in the United States.

Nellie Tayloe Ross, who became governor of Wyoming in 1927 and later was appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as the first director of the U.S. Mint, bought the Southern Maryland farm in 1949. It has remained in her family ever since.

Built in 1720, the center-hall manor house is constructed of Flemish bond brick. The five-bedroom, 4,802-square-foot home has a double-door entry that leads into a hall with two-part crown molding and wainscoting that are probably original to the home. The country kitchen has an exposed brick backsplash and exposed beams.

Other buildings on the grounds include a garden cottage and two tenant houses, a pool house, a carriage house and a stable with 17 stalls. There are 11 fields including several hay fields, small turnout paddocks and large pastures — plenty of room to raise cattle or train horses.

For those partial to the sea, the property has 6,000 feet of waterfront shoreline and a 250-foot-long pier with an electronic boat lift. While sitting poolside on the backyard patio, it is possible to spot a variety of wildlife, including wild turkeys, bald eagles, osprey, great blue herons and egrets.

About 53 miles from Washington in Newburg, the historic waterfront farm is on the market for $4.45 million.
