After entering the gates of Alderley, you may feel as though you’ve left Northern Virginia behind and stepped into the Cotswolds.

The home on Innsbruck Avenue in Great Falls is reflective of the distinctive honey-colored stone manor houses that populate that region of England. At night, when it is bathed in light, it glows.

“It’s so stunning,” said listing agent Penny Yerks of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty. “It takes your breath away.”

Former journalist and AOL executive Richard Hanlon, who was born in the United Kingdom, and his wife, Pam, enlisted David Cooper, principal of ACG Architects, and Bowa Builders to create an English country manor in 2007. The home was later recognized by the Fairfax County Exceptional Design Awards, whose judges noted “the careful attention to historical styles and details when used in a contemporary context.”

Alderley — perhaps a nod to Alderley Edge, the affluent village in Cheshire, England — is guarded by 30-foot evergreens that surround the property’s five acres and provide heightened seclusion.

The 20,150-square-foot home feels more cozy than cavernous with its charming niches and elegant spaces. The grand foyer and reception hall are flanked on either side by a formal living room and dining room. The library has wall-to-wall built-in bookshelves, and there’s a two-story home office.

The spacious kitchen has a large center island, a butler’s pantry and an attached breakfast room with French doors that lead to the beautifully landscaped courtyard. A guest house is attached to the main house.

The master suite, which can be found in its own wing on the first floor, has his-and-her baths and dressing rooms, a sitting area with a gas fireplace. In all, there are six bedrooms, seven full bathrooms, two powder rooms and five fireplaces.

The walk-out lower level has a large recreation room, a home theater with tiered seating for 12 leather recliners, a fitness area and an expansive wine cellar with a tasting room. The outdoor swimming pool is heated.

The property is listed at $8.75 million. This home will be part of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty “Parade of Homes” open house tour in McLean and Great Falls this weekend. You can visit Alderley on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.
