Jan Vesely, the Wizards’s top draft choice from June’s draft, is listed as day-to-day with a right hip injury and is unlikely to be available for the season opener on Monday against the New Jersey Nets.

Coach Flip Saunders hoped to have Vesely on the active roster for opening night and gave his players the day off on Saturday to help them get prepared for the upcoming grind of the 66-game season. A day of rest did little to subside the pain in Vesely’s right hip and he sat out Sunday’s two-hour practice at Verizon Center.

Saunders said last week that Vesely underwent an X-ray and MRI for what he described as a “twinge” inside his hip and both were negative. Vesely wasn’t certain what the problem was, but said that he felt some discomfort in the Wizards’ final practice before the preseason opener.

Vesely attempted to practice last Wednesday but was unable to finish, and has been limited since getting seven points, three rebounds and two steals in 22 minutes the Wizards’ first preseason loss on Dec. 16 against the Philadelphia 76ers. He warmed up before the next game in Philadelphia but didn’t play.
