The “G team” isn’t exactly running plays from Flip Saunders’s play book this week at the Impact Basketball Competitive Training Series in Las Vegas. The Wizards’ Jordan Crawford says they are “kind of freestyling, just playing with a lot of energy.” Crawford had a triple-double with 20 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists, while a re-energized Rashard Lewis had 21 points and 16 rebounds. JaVale McGee made a hilarious dunk that resulted in him falling on his baskside. Afterward, John Wall smirked at McGee and shook his head.
McGee also had some interesting interactions with veteran Kenyon Martin, who got physical with McGee every opportunity he could. Martin didn’t have any problem sending McGee to the foul line instead of winding up on a highlight, and he forced McGee to sharpen his moves in the low post, surrendering no ground. But Martin also offered a scathing criticism of McGee during the game.
McGee got the ball in the low block and quickly turned to attempt a long jump hook. Martin shouted an expletive upon the release, refusing to believe that it would go in. It didn’t, and Martin quickly called for a substitute to replace him. When he sat down, Martin apologized to fans for using foul language, then turned to reporters along the baseline. “He’s shooting the ball like he’s Kareem. I know I’m not that good but I’m not calling for the ball.”
