A Roadmap
for Growing
Good Jobs
Put yourself in a mayor’s shoes. You’ve come into office at a time when news reports suggest the American workforce is thriving, with unemployment at a 50-year low. But you don’t see this reality in your city. You see a shrinking middle class and many of your constituents relying on low-wage work. How do you make sense of it all?

Analytics can help. Data-driven insights can illuminate local labor market dynamics and employment prospects. Armed with this information—outlined below for 25 American cities—it becomes easier to craft policies that accelerate growth and attract quality jobs. We know you and your workforce face real challenges, but we’ve crunched the numbers to offer you a roadmap to help overcome them.
The insights are based on new research from Brookings’ Workforce of the Future initiative, which is led by Senior Fellow Marcela Escobari and supported by the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth. The research applies network science to analyze each city’s unique capabilities—including infrastructure, talent and institutions—and help leaders map new opportunities to grow sectors based on their city’s strengths and priorities.
