If you think about decades ago, when 4G networks were being rolled out, we would not at the time have thought of the technologies that we use today. Now 5G is just being rolled out right now. The initial use case of consumer use will be in the form of a smartphone. And there will be new services that entrepreneurs and startups will develop that leverage the capabilities of this network that's being deployed today. And in other industries—like manufacturing, like health care—there will be use cases that also leverage the capability of the 5G network as more of these devices are connected, and as more of these networks are being rolled out in different settings. We think the internet of things—as more and more of these devices get connected —that's also going to take unique advantage of the 5G network.

Superior, security-rich connections between people and devices will help improve the quality of care and create significant change in how it’s delivered. For example, TytoCare, a Qualcomm Ventures-supported company, has created a handheld exam kit and app with which patients can do their own in-home exams. They can then transfer that data to a doctor.

Such innovations also could help improve global public health. Supported by 5G, telemedicine can transmit large patient data files in near real time and across continents. Multiple doctors could be engaged simultaneously to learn important details of how a new virus is affecting a patient, conduct exams over live connections and together assess the best course of action. In situations where every minute counts, this could be life-changing.

Better education everywhere

Roughly 58 percent of Americans living in rural areas believe they don’t have enough access to high-speed broadband,1 and FCC data confirms that rural areas are much less likely to be wired for broadband and see a significant drop-off in internet performance and speed compared to metropolitan areas.2

5G could help provide fixed wireless access to homes, schools and small businesses when alternatives such as cable or fiber optic are not economically viable. This means most students could have equal access to the same information and curriculums via wireless 5G connectivity, helping close the opportunity gap that contributes to socioeconomic inequality in education.

I think some of the transformative innovations that leverage Qualcomm's technologies come in these areas where devices are talking to devices —smart cities and such where in automotive, you can actually have your automobile looking two cars ahead, where a human can't see two cars ahead. And with broader connectivity, and actually connectivity like 5G connectivity, which has such high speeds and reliability, you get a tremendous boost in your ability to school at home. But frankly, what I'm really excited about are those applications that we cannot imagine are going to come by. When you build something like 5G, and you do the research and the development, and you get it deployed, people come up with all kinds of wonderful innovations.
