Whispering Woods -- McLean, Va., mansion designed for big entertaining -- up for auction

Buyers will be able to bid in person and online when the mansion in McLean, Va., known as Whispering Woods goes on the auction block on Feb. 27. The 15,000-square-foot mansion at 8305 Alvord St. rests on three acres behind fences and gates.

The house has six bedrooms and 10 bathrooms, but it’s mainly designed for big entertaining: The house has a 3,300-square-foot ballroom with gold-leaf wall decorations, a 500-pound crystal chandelier, Palladian windows, marble columns, a fireplace and an inlaid wood floor. The ballroom has been the setting for numerous fundraisers and elaborate parties since the two-story ballroom wing was added to the home in 1989.

The original house was built in 1977. The ballroom wing also has two powder rooms, a conference room, an exercise room, a billiards room, an office and a catering kitchen.

The main wing of the house features a two-story marble foyer, a great room with a 20-foot-tall stone fireplace and a beamed ceiling, formal living and dining rooms, a study and a kitchen and breakfast room with tall windows. A veranda faces the woods.

The master suite includes a sitting room, a fireplace, two walk-in closets and a luxury bathroom with marble floors, a soaking tub and a separate shower.

For buyers interested in more space, the property includes county-approved plans and permits for a four-car garage, a guest house, a swimming pool and outdoor entertainment space.

Whispering Woods can be visited Feb. 10, 16 and 24 between 1 and 3 p.m.

Those interested in bidding online should register and provide $25,000 deposit by Feb. 26th at 5 p.m. There is no minimum bid requirement, but the sale is subject to seller approval.
