Over-the-fence chats with neighbors have always been a great way to hear the latest local news, find out who’s buying and selling homes, and hear about what’s happening in nearby schools.

Nextdoor, a website whose mission is to build stronger community connections through online communication in addition to in-person conversations, recently added a real estate element to its site. Known as Your Home, the new feature will connect people with information about their neighborhood’s housing and enable quick contact with a local real estate agent.

According to Nextdoor, 1 in 4 conversations on the site are related to real estate and the home, which led to the company deciding to provide a way for real estate agents to establish connections and share neighborhood tips and advice. For consumers, the Your Home feature includes information on local housing trends and market conditions, as well as recent listings and sales. Your Home includes a Home Sale calculator to estimate your potential profit from a sale based on your mortgage payoff amount, a real estate agent commission and an offer price.

Homeowners interested in selling, getting an evaluation of their home or just understanding the market can click on a “Talk to an Expert” tab from the app to reach a local agent.

While Nextdoor can provide the personal touch of a conversation with neighbors and local agents, the national mortgage lender Guaranteed Rate launched a market research platform this year that can help home buyers explore various neighborhoods.

The research platform functions as a centralized place to search by city name or Zip code to find out neighborhood property trends, home prices, demographics, income levels and school districts — all information that can be useful to buyers when they are trying to narrow their location choice.
