Williams & Connolly law partner Jim Tanner has left the firm to launch his own sports agency, Tandem Sports & Entertainment, which will be based in Arlington.

Tanner, 45, who was at Williams & Connolly for 16 years, has taken a big chunk of the law firm’s sports practice with him, including Helen Dooley, who will be his senior vice president and general counsel at Tandem; Terese Whitehead, senior vice president for marketing; Shana Martin, senior vice president for business operations; Graham Boone, director of basketball operations; and Kenyon Redfoot, who heads brand strategy.

“I’ve been at Williams & Connolly for the past 16 years, and there’s not a finer law firm in the world,” Tanner said. “But the more I thought about where I wanted to go with the practice, it made sense to leave and have a singular focus on sports and entertainment.”

Tanner said his last day at the firm was Oct. 11. His new practice starts Oct. 15.

Longtime agent Derrick Powell, formerly of New York-based Excel Sports Management, has also joined Tandem as vice president for player representation. Also joining Tandem is Matt Laczkowski, who will be director of athlete representation and staff counsel.

Tanner’s tenure at Williams & Connolly began in 1997, when he was brought in to assist then-partner Lon Babby, who had begun the athlete representation practice at the firm with his first client, Grant Hill.

Tanner became a partner at the firm in 2003 and assumed a large part of the practice when Babby left to become president of basketball operations of the Phoenix Suns three years ago.

Tanner has signed several athletes in the ensuing years, including high-profile NBA guard Jeremy Lin and John Henson, a North Carolina graduate who plays forward for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Additionally, Meredith Geisler and her independent sports communications practice, Meredith Communications, will now be integrated into Tandem where Geisler will serve as senior vice president of communications. Prior to establishing Meredith Communications in 2001, she was the public relations director at Fila, Advantage International (now Octagon Worldwide) and Total Sports.

Tandem’s client roster includes Harvard graduate Lin, Reston native Hill, former NBA MVP Tim Duncan, Miami Heat guard Ray Allen, and former WNBA MVP Tamika Catchings.

Taking one for the team

In solidarity with employees affected by the federal government shutdown, executives at Fairfax-based contractor ICF International said last week that they will reduce their own base salaries by 20 percent, staff writer Marjorie Censer tells us. The “reductions will remain in effect until the company has clarity regarding the impact of the government shutdown on federal markets and its corresponding impact on the company,” ICF said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Under the plan, Sudhakar Kesavan, the company’s chief executive, will see his base salary drop from roughly $793,000 to $634,000.

Energy savings

Just how much money could you save in a year if the U.S. were to double its energy productivity? About $1,039 per household, according to projections by Kateri Callahan at the Cleantech Open Southeast Regional Innovation Summit and Gala. Staff writer Sarah Halzack reports that Callahan, the president of the Alliance to Save Energy, outlined her organization’s ambitious goal of doubling energy productivity by 2030 in a keynote speech kicking off the annual event, which took place at The Washington Post. Entrepreneurs, investors and public sector leaders gathered to discuss strategies for financing clean technology start-ups and addressing critical environmental challenges.

Matt Matros’s Protein Bar plans openings, including one at 17th and K Street in the District and one in Rockville, both early next year. The money is coming from a recent investment from Catterton Partners, a private equity firm experienced in franchise food. The $22 million deal would gave Catterton a majority stake in Protein Bar. Chicago-based Protein, founded in 2009, is a fast-casual, health-food-focused chain with 12 restaurants in Chicago and D.C. It currently has three locations in the Washington market, including: 7th Street NW, 9th Street NW and Ballston.

“We are aggressively looking for more sites around Washington,” Matros said. “We love D.C. because it has one of the most educated consumer bases you can find.”

Financial services firm Edward Jones hires 29 new financial advisers in the Washington area with a goal of 36 by year end.

District-based Jose Andres Foods, a new line of products from Spain’s small producers, heads to the shelves of Whole Foods Markets in the Washington area Oct. 14. The selection includes extra-virgin olive oils, sherry vinegars, artisanal potato chips, tinned Galician seafood and classic Spanish olives.
