Bottom line: Infiniti is Nissan’s luxury vehicle division. As such, the FX37 is designed more for show than it is for rugged family haul and tow. You can get better utility in many less expensive wagons and utility vehicles.

Ride, acceleration and handling: Excellent marks in acceleration and handling. The sports-like ride might be a tad too stiff for some drivers and passengers.

Head-turning quotient: Attractive. It’s reminiscent of a wind-blown wave.

Body style/layout: The 2013 Infiniti FX is a midsize luxury, front-engine, wagon/crossover-utility vehicle with four side doors and a rear hatch. It is available with rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive.

Engines: There are two: the (selected for this column) 3.7-liter, 24-valve V-6 with variable valve lift and timing (325 horsepower, 267 foot-pounds of torque). Also available is the FX50 with a 5-liter V-8 (390 horsepower, 369 foot-pounds of torque). Both take a standard 7-speed automatic transmission that also can be operated manually.

Capacities: There are seats for five people. Real-world cargo capacity with rear seats up holds four average-size duffle bags. The fuel tank holds 23.8 gallons of gasoline. Premium grade is required.

Mileage: Real-world mileage was 16 miles per gallon in the city and 21 miles per gallon on the highway.

Safety: Standard equipment in the FX 37 8includes four-wheel ventilated disc brakes; four-wheel antilock brake protection; emergency braking assistance; electronic brake-force distribution; electronic stability and traction control; side and head air bags. Recommended optional safety equipment includes automatic lane and blind-side monitoring devices.
