The unique problem of cleaning diesel engine exhaust

According to the charges leveled last week, Volkswagen used a software “defeat device” to cheat on the testing. Allegedly, the software, when it detected regulatory testing, ran a different, more controlled engine calibration to meet test requirements. Actual nitrogen oxide emissions were as much as 40 times the U.S. standard.
