The Washington area led the country in the percentage of people who claim the mortgage interest deduction on their 2010 taxes, according to a study by the Pew Charitable Trusts. Maryland was the highest with 36.8 percent and Virginia was third with 33.2 percent. The District was 25.3 percent, just below the national average, and West Virginia was the lowest at 15 percent.
