Take a cab without carrying cash

Running low on cash but in need of a cab? If you’ve found yourself in this admittedly frustrating situation, try Flywheel — formerly known as Cabulous — which lets you hail a city cab while paying with your credit card. Not only does the app keep you from fumbling around for cash, it even lets you keep your card on file by taking a picture of it rather than having to type it. To find a cab, fire Flywheel up to let it you know where you are. As with similar car-service apps such as Uber, this one gives you estimates about how long it should take for a pickup.

Therein lies the main downside: Although plenty of Washington area cabs are supporting Flywheel, not all do. That can lead to longer wait times and, in some cases, offset the convenient benefits of not having to carry cash. Free, for iOS and Android devices.
