Cutting it close? Barnes and Noble’s got you covered. Order a Nook, Nook Simple Touch or Nook Tablet by 11:59 p.m. Thursday, and the book retailer will give you free expedited shipping for delivery by Christmas.

The Nook Tablet — the bookstore’s answer to the Kindle Fire — will be adding more applications to its curated app store, including Words with Friends, Plants vs. Zombies and Twitter. The tablet already gives users access to e-books, interactive magazines and kids books, music through services such as Pandora, and video through Netflix and Hulu Plus.

Words with Friends will be available on the souped-up reader Thursday; Twitter and Plants vs. Zombies will make their way to the market “soon.”

Barnes and Noble has said that the Nook devices are the “most-gifted” products from the company, and is offering quite the trade-in deal for anyone struggling with the decision to upgrade. Through Dec. 24, people with a Nook first edition device can trade in their readers for a $50 gift card when they purchase a new Nook.
