It may be Tuesday, but retailers are milking every bit of excitement they can from Cyber Monday by continuing to offer deep discounts throughout the week.
Amazon, Wal-Mart and others are putting up a week of Cyber Monday-like deals on their Web sites, stretching the shopping frenzy that started on Thanksgiving over an even longer period. The stores are adding more deals to their sites as the week progresses in an effort to lure customers back to their sites repeatedly throughout the day.
Deals on tap for today include a 32GB Panasonic camcorder at a 45 percent discount at Amazon and a $349 HP laptop bundle at Wal-Mart. Best Buy is also getting into the Cyber Week spirit, offering its deals through Dec. 3, across the store.
The sale push paid off for online retailers this year, according to the latest figures on Cyber Monday sales. IBM’s Benchmark research firm found that online spending was 33 percent higher than the same period last year and was 29.3 percent higher than Black Friday 2011. On average, consumers spent an average of $198.26 per order, up about $5 from Cyber Monday 2010.
The peak shopping time, the report said, was at 2:05 p.m., Eastern time, though shopping also surged after commuting hours. Social networks also played a role in the shopping, generating .56 percent of all shopping traffic, mostly from Facebook.
